Thanks-Giving

Thanksgiving was a wonderful time at our house. The fall leaves flying around in the yard, while the turkey cooked in the oven. We had every food you could imagine on the table when we sat down to eat. Dad sliced the turkey as mom prepared to fill each plate and pass it along. Everyone was there together on this special day. “Nothing could be better than this,” I thought.

Today, so many years later, I look back at those days to see the very most important thing of all was missing. Dad never bowed his head to give thanks to the Lord, at least not in our presence. We never heard the gospel spoken over the bounty we shared. Oh yes, it was a good time, spent with the people we loved and that made it a wonderful thing. However, I wish, I had heard of the lord.

Thanksgiving for us seemed to be about the wonderful foods served on a beautifully decorated table, with friends, and family seated close by to enjoy it. We missed out on the rest of the story.

Men and women came from another country to find religious freedom. They left behind everything they’d ever known to be able to worship God as they desired. In this new land, they joined the natives in a meal of thanksgiving to the Lord who brought them to this place. Of course this is a seriously short version of what took place, but the idea is that this holiday is a time to give thanks to the God who gave us this great land. I thank God that I was born an American, and although Christian rights are disappearing a little at a time, I thank God for the freedoms I still enjoy. This is the best country on the face of the earth.

We need to remember why this country was born in the first place. Give thanks for the blessings God has poured out on us, and pray for every American that we will stand up during this election to benefit from the rights that are ours. Because we are free, I have the right to vote. Because we are free, I have the right to give thanks to an Almighty God.

Standing in my yard, watching the fall leaves blowing around with the wind, I prepare to have thanksgiving again. Today however, I will tell my children and grandchildren the reason for this meal. I will speak the name of the Lord Jesus Christ over a meal fit for a King, and thank God that I live here in the land of the free and the home of the brave, where I can ( for now) worship the Lord without fear.
