ROLLER COASTER OF TRUST
by Tammie Smith

Creaking, slowly and steadily, the coaster moves forward as it eases its way up to the top.    I am afraid of heights, but somehow I always ride the roller coasters with my family. I like the adrenaline rush I get from the ride, but I am scared at the top. I always tell myself before I get on the coaster that I will trust and not be afraid. As soon as the ride hits the top, I began to fret and worry that I will not make it off the ride.

Recently, my family went to Lego Land to enjoy a day of family fun. Lego Land is a fun park that is geared toward kids. My six-year-old daughter can ride every coaster in the park except one.  My husband voted for me to go with my daughter and her friend to ride the rides, and he would keep our son entertained.

I went off with the girls to find fun and adventure. Their idea of fun was to ride the dragon ride first. As we were waiting in line to ride the coaster, I said a quick prayer. Father, keep me safe and secure. Amen

We slide into our seats and the coaster starts off on a slow and steady journey through the Lego land castle. We laugh and joke as we see the many displays. Then we exited the castle, and the real ride begins.

Creaking, jerking, slowly and steadily, we ease our way to the top. When I arrived at the top of the coaster, my faith falters and I began to fear. I began thinking of all the bad that could happen. I don't trust that God will keep me safe as the coaster teeters and totters at the top.  It then pummels down toward the ground and back up and around.

My lack of trust and fear on the coaster can be a reflection of my life with Christ. When I am tee-tottering at the top, I say a prayer for safety.  Yet, when life plummets down, I don't trust God to keep me safe.  I get scared and afraid that I will not be able to make it through this latest trial. I need to remember God loves me, and he always has my best interest at heart. I need to remember to trust in him and follow his leading. God is my strength, by trusting him, I can get through the roller coaster of my life.

The Bible has many verses on trusting in the Lord. One my favorites can be found in Isaiah. God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD, is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. Isaiah 12:2

It is my prayer that I remember to trust in the Lord because he is my strength. Father, Help me to always trust in our strength. Help me to remember not to be afraid but to rely solely on your strength. Amen
