“The American Dream.” What is it? Prosperity and success? This can be defined many different ways. For some it could be the right job, the right salary, or a happy home. However, there are those people that define the dream a little differently: they want to be their own boss.
Before you take the plunge of starting a business or buying one, there are a lot of things to consider: start up capital and financing, legalities of for your business, permits and licenses, and applicable tax laws.
So, what could be more important than those things? You! You are your own biggest asset. This is the first thing that you must realize. Before you can start anything externally, it’s first processed internally. Many people enter business ventures and never really grasp this principal. This is key to operating any successful organization, because what you do should be an outward expression of your personal idealism and creativity. It should be something you enjoy so that others will enjoy their experience with you. If you never take the first step of discovering your potential, your creativity, and those things that you have a passion for, business will become an uneventful, mundane experience and this is exactly what your customers will experience as well.
The journey that only you can take for yourself. The journey of self-discovery may lead you into unknown territory, or you may find that you are suited perfectly for the business you’ve been dreaming of owning! Either way, you will never know unless you take the time to find out who you are inside and what makes you happy as an individual. When you discover these foundational truths about yourself, you can better determine the direction that you need to go in and the pursuit of your dream will be much more fulfilling.
I often coach people through this process by using behavior and personality tests and many other types of indicators, but you can start this discovery without any of these tools.
First, list the things that you enjoy doing most. It doesn’t matter whether it is a hobby or something you do at your current job.
You must have a passion for your chosen area of business. This passion could be for absolutely anything. One person opened his home to people who wanted to play video games and created a video game league. Next, list all of things you like about your job and everything that you don’t like. If you’re going to start your own business, it should fit around your desired lifestyle. Maybe you love interacting with people but you hate to wear dress clothes everyday. It’s your vision and you set the rules. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, weigh your motives and desires. Are you pursuing something because you want to or because someone else thinks it would be a great idea? Do you have something to prove to the world or yourself? You must be centered and grounded; constantly check your motives as you move forward.
Discover yourself and your passions. Develop your skills and make your dream a reality.
